The horn -- which in olden times heralded the arrival of the post -- is featured in both stamps issued on the 83rd anniversary of the UPU. Pretty Merilyn Walker proudly displays giant-sized reproductions of the attractive stamps. Canada, who will officially unveil her electronic postal brain during the Congress, will urge that interchange of new postal techniques among UPU members be speeded up.

While the origins of postal service go back to the early empires of the far east, the history of global postal agreements dates back only to 1874 when the Universal Postal Union first met at Berne, Switzerland. Canada, who this year is host to the 14th congress of the UPU, has earned an enviable reputation for the efficiency and speed with which she despatches the mails. Above, siderographer checks plate which will print one of the two Canadian stamps issued to commemorate the event.
