Shades of a warlike past are recalled by Anne Shiels seen brandishing a tomahawk in the Huron Indian village at Midland. The palisaded village, which duplicates a Huron community of 1610, has been reconstructed from written records of the first white men in the area and from recent excavations.

Visitors to the Indian village examine pelts similar to those the Hurons themselves prepared for trade with Champlain and the coureurs de bois. Interior of the longhouse, winter living quarters, has been furnished with longhouse articles; stocked with dried meats, fish, herbs and vegetables.

Légende
Battered hull of the British naval schooner 'Tecumseth' lies at rest near the Fort Penetanguishene museum. Built on Niagara River in 1814 for defence against the States, Tecumseth plied the waters of Georgian Bay till 1819. The ship was raised from the harbour at Penetang in 1953.

Huronia, that section of Ontario's Georgian Bay country, once ruled by the mighty Huron nation, lives again to-day in a series of projects designed to perpetuate a colorful chapter in Canada's history. Together, the citizens of Simcoe county and Western University archaeologists have established the Huronia and Penetanguishene museums, have partially reconstructed Fort St. Marie and more recently reconstructed a complete Indian village. Seen above, the village contains bark covered longhouses and summer sleeping shelters, lookout tree, drying racks, a canoe in construction and even a tobacco patch.
