It was the early Acadian settlers who first introduced apple growing to the province in the late 17th century. They erected dykes against the sea, reclaimed thousands of acres of rich land, laid out the orchards which became the basis of the prosperous apple industry of today.

The Queen, against a lovely background of blossoms, poses happily with her pretty young attendants. The traditional Nova Scotian festival has developed into a program of colourful pageantry, which features a grand parade, community singing, folk-dancing and many brilliant displays where the romance of the province's storied past is recalled throughout a land fragrant with apple blossoms.

One of the many picturesque spots which are dotted throughout Nova Scotia's famed Annapolis Valley is Clementsport, often called the "Queen of the Basin". To the right of Clementsport, the Blue Mountains of the Micmacs, rich in Indian lore, take their rise. The township was settled by Loyalists of Dutch and German descent who built the sparkling white church in the foreground in 1789.

Each year, at the end of May, the beautiful festival of the blossoms is held in many villages and towns throughout Nova Scotia's lush Annapolis Valley. The Memorial chapel in the background has never been used as a church, but serves as a museum for Indian and Acadian relics, as well as for those of the first New England settlers in the Minas country. Above, last year's festival Queen lays a bouquet of apple blossoms at the statue of Evangeline in Grand Pre's national historic park.
