Besides airport control towers, there are 7 major control centres in Canada at Gander, Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. Before an instrument flight can take off from any airport, clearance must be obtained from an area control centre as well.

In addition to a regular flying licence, all aircraft captains are required to hold an instrument rating obtained after the most rigid of check flights. Last minute contact with the control tower is made through a two-way radio in preparation for the take-off.

Either visual or instrument flight regulations can be used in flying but most air transport lines use the latter. This basket type of radar antenna is made of metal and acts as an electric eye to indicate the location of all craft within the airport area.

To take care of the ever-increasing volume of flights, Canada has started schools in Winnipeg and Toronto to train young men as air traffic controllers. The six months course provides three months of theory followed by another three of practical experience in the tower.

The approach controller's radius is from 50 to 40 miles from the airport. He charts arrivals, departures, and flights overhead transmitting instructions to aircraft by pulling a selector key for the proper radio frequency or gives general orders by throwing all keys.
